Steve Jobs died today. The legendary CEO of Apple left a mark that few will forget. There will be a multitude of articles written about him, his career, his influence, and his remarkable ability to see the future and lead a revolution, all better than I could write. Nonetheless, I feel compelled to write something. Today’s Apple conference was to many, a disappointment. Nearly everyone expected an iPhone5 release but there was no such luck. Instead, Apple rolled out an iPhone4S, a newer version of its iPhone4 with some enhancements including a very nice camera. The stock took an immediate nosedive (though later recovered) and potential iPhone5 buyers were forced to make a choice of sticking with their plans to buy Apple or reverting to another smartphone option. The siloes that permeate the healthcare delivery landscape are multiple and pervasive — everyone knows this fact. And yet, they are extremely difficult to break down or alter. The connections between and among patients and providers are in many ways the most powerful in the system. As physicians face increased pressure to see more patients and access to information widens while education surrounding approaches to care seemingly constricts, there remains a gap that can be powerful and can negatively affect outcomes.
